Mauritius Promotes Itself as a Long Stay Destination
Mauritius is often said to be an ideal tourist spot thanks to its excellent weather, its fair share of absolutely fantastic beaches, and its great lifestyle. The number of tourists travelling to Mauritius each year is always quite large and there obviously exists a booming tourist industry in the whole island. However, since the worldwide pandemic occurred, the whole tourism industry has been slowed down. Short term international vacations are thus tough for travellers in the age of coronavirus, which brings a whole level of stress past the usual queues and security searches. Mauritius is today, therefore, targeting travellers on a long-term basis to make up for the loss in short term stays.
Mauritius a Safe Destination
The country recorded its first case of Covid-19 on 19 March 2020. Several measures have been undertaken by the Mauritian government in response to the pandemic, which includes a travel restriction, closure of the borders and a lockdown. Since then all the necessary sanitary and other precautionary measures are being taken and the island is completely safe for travellers. Mauritius ongoing commitment for the fight against the spread of the Covid-19 has been recognised by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). The country has been declared a « Safe Travel Destination » by the council since 26th April 2020.
With the partial opening of the borders since 01st October 2020 the island is now accessible to travellers willing to come for long stays. The objective is welcoming travellers back in a COVID-19 secured context. For those that fancy a long-term stay, the idea of a chance to work from such an idyllic setting may outweigh the testing requirements.
Quarantine Procedures
Upon arrival in Mauritius, a 14-day quarantine will be mandatory by an establishment approved by the authorities. A travel package will be made available online for passengers and will include:
- Accommodation, on a full-board basis, for the 14-day quarantine.
- Transfer from the airport to the hotel.
- Health costs including mandatory PCR tests.
